The Museum of the Middle Appalachians mourns the loss of our dear friend and supporter, Charles “Butch” Surber (September 1, 1948 – October 17, 2025). Butch’s passion for preserving our region’s history—and his unwavering willingness to help—touched everyone who knew him. He was often among the first to step forward for a project, lend a hand, or answer the call to serve.

We are grateful for Butch’s big heart, quiet generosity, and steady encouragement of the Museum’s work. His kindness will be remembered by our staff, volunteers, and the many neighbors he supported throughout his life.
